THE OLD MACLEAY

As I was walking on The Old MacLeay
The breeze was blowin’ and the leaves were swayin’
The only thing I that I had on my mind
Why did I ever leave you behind?

The cormorant dries his wings in the sun
Way back there where I started my run
Kingfisher darts through a gap in the trees
He makes his way into God’s masterpiece

There’s a place in my heart
By the banks of the Old MacLeay
The sky has turned gold, and I’m making my way
Down through the sheoaks to the place my heart was lost
Buried there somewhere on the Old MacLeay

The big river winds like a lazy brown snake
Down through the flood plains down Chinchilla way
In the heart of the world it has started to rain
All I can think of is to be near you again

So it’s all hands on deck lads, anchors aweigh
Tide’s rushing out and we’ve outrun our stay
Though in the west there’s a star burning bright
And the lay of the land is a glorious sight

There’s a place in my heart
By the banks of the Old MacLeay
The sky has turned gold as I make my way
Down through the sheoak trees to the place my heart was lost
It’s buried there, somewhere, on the Old MacLeay.
